Quieting Our Minds in Agitated Times
Resonant Silence Technique® (RST) came to me for I needed it; I needed to calm down from a world that felt loud and over-stimulating to me. Through the following experience, I discovered an antidote to this over-stimulus and a path to lasting peace.
Over 25 years ago I attended a continuing education healing conference at an old New England college. The conference was held in the exquisite stain-glass windowed cathedral of the college. 150 of us were all assembled in the pews and we were listening to the first speaker. When she finished, there was complete silence for about a minute and I remember thinking, “Wow, it’s really quiet in here.” Then, the next speaker began to talk and I realized that I felt different.
The day before I had just flown cross-country from Seattle to attend this conference and today I had been feeling jet-lagged and irritable. After this brief space of silence, I noticed that I felt wonderful; no more tiredness. I felt clear and energized. “Remarkable!” I thought. If this little space of silence after sound could help me so much I thought, maybe a small interval of silence after sound would benefit the folks with dementia who I was working with in Seattle.
After the silence I felt my brain and nervous system reset and I felt like a new person. It turns out that this reset feeling is supported by scientific research. We’ll cover these important scientific findings in a later post.
And after this blessed experience of discovering the healing and restorative properties of silence and created Resonant Silence Technique@ (RST).
